Weeks after she was photographed frolicking on vacation with a female friend, Avril Lavigne  is engaged… to a man.

And not just any man, but to a fellow musician a.k.a. Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger. Apparently, the two had been secretly dating for the last six months. For realz.

Avril, 27, and Chad, 37, started dating after co-writing a song for Avril‘s upcoming fifth studio album. “A romantic relationship blossomed as they spent time writing together,” a pal of Avril’s tells PEOPLE. “He makes her so happy,” a family source adds.

Avril’s rep confirmed the engagement news to PEOPLE, which is also reporting that Chad proposed with a 14-carat diamond engagement ring on Wednesday (August 8).

This will make the first marriage for Chad and the second for Avril, who was previously married to Sum 41 lead singer Deryck Whibley before they split in 2009.
