Jessica Simpson Gets Backlash for Photo of Baby Maxwell In a Bikini!
On September 10th, Jessica Simpson appeared on Katie Couric’s new show to show off her new body, after having lost 40 pounds post-baby. Way to go Jess!
During the interview, Jessica also showed off a picture of her baby girl Maxwell in a homemade yellow crochet bikini, telling Couric, “She’s posing! It’s her very first time to put on a bikini.” The audience oohed and ahhed, but after the interview, the onslaught of negative comments started pouring in around the Internet.
While not everyone thinks there is something wrong with how Simpson dressed up her baby, the adorable picture of the even more adorable baby Maxwell has now become a source of outrage to the director of the British child welfare agency, Kidscape, Claude Knights, and British journalist Tanith Carey.
Knights told the UK Daily Mail that, “It is very disturbing to see a young baby presented to the world wearing a bikini.” He also went on to say that, “Celebrity choices carry great influence, as can be seen by the manner in which their accessories and behaviors are copied widely. It is to be hoped that parents will understand that ‘baby bikinis’ are totally inappropriate, and that they contribute to the sexualization and commercialization of childhood. We should not be compromising the sanctity of our children’s early years.”
Meanhwile, in an entirely separate article also published by the Daily Mail, Carey had this to rant, um say, about the picture, “bras and bikinis were invented to cover and support a woman’s breasts. Putting them on a baby is plain wrong. For those idiotic souls who think dressing Maxwell in a bikini is funny or cute, how about considering the next logical extension to this trend? Baby thongs perhaps? Or a range of shape-wear nappies to flatten out those little rounded tummies? Pictures like these remove the essential taboos that surround the exploitation of very young children.”
Maybe this all makes sense to the people making these statements. However, one has to wonder if the real creepy factor isn’t Jessica’s baby in a bikini, but the people who find a baby in a bikini something sexual. After all, in the summer, you can spot babies in bathing suits and bikini’s alike on the beach, as well as splashing around in pools. Maybe the problem isn’t with the choice of swimwear. Maybe the problem is with people who are so cynical they can take something as innocent as a child wearing a two-piece and turn it into something perverse.
Hmmm … something to think about while you’re pretending that picture isn’t making you say: “Awwwwwwww!”
