Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters Is #1 at Box Office, Movie 43 Flops!
Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, cast a spell on movie goers this weekend grabbing the No. 1 box office spot with a $19 million debut. The film, starring actor Jeremy Renner, cost $50 million to produce and was actually originally scheduled to be released in theaters back in March 2012. January is usually the month reserved for the release of movies that are, well, basically crap, but for now at least, audiences put this one on top- despite its poor ratings.
Horror film, Mama, dropped down to second place this week earning a total of $12.9 million during its second week of release. The film has already earned close to $48.7 million, quickly making back its $15 million budget … and then some.
Silver Linings Playbook is still holding on tight to third place, bringing in $10 million over the weekend. The awards buzz surrounding this film has kept audience interest intact.
Academy Award nominee, Zero Dark Thirty, plummeted into fourth place, earning only $9.8 million over the weekend. So far the thriller has brought in $69.9, surpassing its $40 million budget.
Meeting its low expectations Jason Statham’s Parker, also starring Jennifer Lopez, came in at fifth place, bringing in $7 million during its opening weekend. Considering its estimated $35 million budget, its weekend earnings is more suspenseful than audiences found the crime film to be.
Meanwhile, the release of the much talked about Movie 43 was a total failure. The film debuted in seventh place at the box office earning only $5 million. The comedy, which only had a $6 million budget & whose cast includes every actor in Hollywood, well not really, but it does star big names such as Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Kate Winslet, and Halle Berry, to name a few, and markets itself as not being for ”the easily-offended,” is being described as vulgar, tasteless, stupid, and worst- not funny. Since its budget was only $6 million it may, at least, make that back.
