“Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) is a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success,” is a quote taken from the New York Observer’s film critic, Rex Reed’s review of the Jason Bateman/Melissa McCarthy flick.
As if that statement weren’t bad enough, Rex also called Melissa “cacophonous” and “tractor-sized,” and refers to her as Mr. Bateman’s “female hippo.”
42-year-old Melissa has been very open about her struggle with losing weight throughout the years, even telling Good Housekeeping that she isn’t sure why she can’t seem to lose any; “I don’t really know why I’m not thinner than I am. I don’t really drink soda, I don’t have a sweet tooth, and we eat healthfully at home.” Melissa also exercises by doing Pilates and playing tennis.
Though she also said that she wished she could “magically” be a size 6, without having to give it a “single thought,” she doesn’t beat herself up for not being able to wear that size 6; “It wouldn’t help, and I don’t want to pass that on to my girls,” the actress said about her two daughters Vivian, 5, and Georgette, 2.
I find it ironic that Rex used the words trashy and stupefying to slam the film, considering just how trashy and absolutely shocking his insults towards Melissa, who is an Emmy winning actress and hardly a “gimmick,” are. Mr. Reed here’s a review on your real life character: You have none.
