Identity Thief snuck its way back to first place in the box office this weekend. The comedy starring Melissa McCarthy, is in its third week of release, and earned $14.1 million this past weekend, giving the film a total gross earnings of $ $93.7 million- Outstanding considering its $25 million budget and critic reviews.
Second place went to Dwayne Johnson’s A.K.A The Rock’s action flick, Snitch. The newly released film, which states it, is “inspired by true events,” only scraped up $13 million this weekend, continuing the trend of struggling action movies we’ve seen so far this year. Pretty low numbers for Snitch when you take into consideration its $35 million budget.
Up one place from last week is Escape from Planet Earth. The animated film earned $11 million during its second week of release, and is slowly making back its $40 million budget.
Rounding up the top five are Safe Haven and A Good Day to Die Hard. Safe Haven earned the fourth place position in the box office by earning $10.6 million this week, helping the film sail past its $28 million budget. Meanwhile, the fifth film in the Die Hard franchise, A Good Day to Die Hard, had very bad days indeed, dropping 60% from last week’s number one box office spot, bringing in $10 million this awards weekend.
