Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters Is #1 at Box Office, Movie 43 Flops!

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, cast a spell on movie goers this weekend grabbing the No. 1 box office spot with a $19 million debut.  The film, starring actor Jeremy Renner, cost $50 million to produce and was actually originally scheduled to be released in theaters back in March 2012.  January is usually the month reserved for the release of movies that are, well, basically crap, but for now at least, audiences put this one on top- despite its poor ratings.

Horror film, Mama, dropped down to second place this week earning a total of $12.9 million during its second week of release.  The film has already earned close to $48.7 million, quickly making back its $15 million budget … and then some.

Silver Linings Playbook is still holding on tight to third place, bringing in $10 million over the weekend.  The awards buzz surrounding this film has kept audience interest intact.

Academy Award nominee, Zero Dark Thirty, plummeted into fourth place, earning only $9.8 million over the weekend.  So far the thriller has brought in $69.9, surpassing its $40 million budget.

Meeting its low expectations Jason Statham’s Parker, also starring Jennifer Lopez, came in at fifth place, bringing in $7 million during its opening weekend.  Considering its estimated  $35 million budget, its weekend earnings is more suspenseful than audiences found the crime film to be.

Meanwhile, the release of the much talked about Movie 43 was a total failure.  The film debuted in seventh place at the box office earning only $5 million.  The comedy, which only had a $6 million budget & whose cast includes every actor in Hollywood, well not really, but it does star big names such as Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Kate Winslet, and Halle Berry, to name a few, and markets itself as not being for ”the easily-offended,” is being described as vulgar, tasteless, stupid, and worst- not funny.  Since its budget was only $6 million it may, at least, make that back.

The Box Office top 5 chart  is below with the total domestic gross to date in brackets.

1. Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters-  $19 million [NEW]

2. Mama- $12.8 million [$48.7 million]

3. Silver Linings Playbook- $10 million [$69.4 million]

4. Zero Dark Thirty-  $9.8 million [$69.9 million]

5. Parker- $7 million [NEW]

Jessica Chastain’s Movies Mama & Zero Dark Thirty 1st and 2nd Place At Box Office!

Jessica Chastain rocked the socks off the box office this past weekend- Her two films Mama, and the widely acclaimed Zero Dark Thirty, earned over a combined $45 million.

Mama, which only had a $15 budget, debuted at the top spot earning $28.1 and is projected to earn $33.2 due to Martin Luther King holiday weekend. The horror film, produced by Guillermo del Toro, spooked away its competition with the story of two young girls left to live alone in the woods for five years, after a horrific tragedy, before they are rescued and move in with their uncle and his girlfriend Annabel (Jessica Chastain.)  The couple soon discover that the girls may be haunted by more than memories of their past.

Jessica’s bad-ass thriller, Zero Dark Thirty nabbed second place earning $17.6 million this weekend, which brings the films total gross to over $55 million, surpassing the films $40 million budget.

Oscar nominee Silver Linings Playbook, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, made its way into third place with $11.4 in earnings after expanding nationwide into 2,523 theaters.  It’s no surprise that the movie, which has been out in limited release for ten weeks, is still doing exceptionally well with all the awards buzz surrounding it lately.

Meanwhile, Gangster Squad continues to disappoint  falling to fourth place, and only bringing in $9.1 million this weekend.   Although the numbers are low, the film has managed to regain half of its $60 million budget.

Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe’s Broken City didn’t fare that well either finding itself in fifth place with $9 million in earning during its opening weekend.  Pretty bad considering it cost $35 million to even make the movie! The political thriller, based in NYC, follows the story of an ex-cop (Mark Wahlberg) bent on revenge after being framed by the mayor of his city.

The Box Office top 5 chart  is below with the total domestic gross to date in brackets.

1. Mama-  $28.1 million [PROJECTED $33.2 million]

2. Zero Dark Thirty-  $17. 6 million [$55.945 million]

Zero Dark Thirty Fights Its Way To #1 At The Box Office!

Although Zero Dark Thirty failed to nab the award for best film last night, movie-goers thought this thriller was the best of them all this weekend.

The film starring Golden Globe winner Jessica Chastin, Jason Clarke, and Joel Edgerton, brought in $24 million, following a nationwide release this past Friday and in spite of the controversy surrounding the movie, which depicts the hunt and subsequent capture and death of Osama Bin Laden.  The movie’s weekend earnings bring Zero Dark Thirty’s total gross to $29.5 million. Not bad as the movie will surely surpass its $40 million budget.

A Haunted House, Michael Tiddes’ comedy horror spoof starring Marlon Wayans, managed to spook up $18.8 million in earnings, landing it the second spot in the box office. An excellent first week considering the movie only cost $2.5 million to make.

Coming in at #3, Gangster Squad, featuring Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stones wasn’t gangsta’ enough to bring in more than a disappointing $16.7 million. This movie appears to be somewhat of a flop considering it cost a pretty pricey $60 million to make.

Academy Award nominated Django Unchained, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, found itself in fourth place with $11.1 million in earnings over the weekend.

Bringing in the rear was Golden Globe winner for Best Comedy/Musical Anne Hathaways Les Miserables, which made its way down to fifth place earning $10.1 million, bringing this award winner total gross earnings to a not so miserable $119.2 million.

Les Miserable Makes #1 Debut at Box Office While Jack Reacher Flops

Les Miserables had nothing to be sad about this week as it managed to snag the #1 position in the box office ratings with $30.2 million dollars in revenue after debuting on Christmas day.
This movie remake of the classic tale of woe, which reportedly had a $61 million budget, boasts mega-stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway in live singing roles. No dubbing here, folks!

In the #2 spot was The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, with another $11.3 million. Certainly this is no Fellowship Of The Ring but has been able to stay respectable within ring lore and movie-goers pockets.

Django Unchained, Tarantino’s western/slavery/action offering, which also debuted on Christmas day, pulled up the reins in 3rd, showing us that even a politically incorrect romp from the olden days can yank $25 million dollars from politically correct viewers in just two days! Django had a reported $83 million budget.

Opposite of that is the family friendly movie Parental Guidance, starring living-legends Billy Crystal and Bette Midler. It’s opening totals gave it 4th with $10.6 million.

Jack Reacher, which cost $60 million to make, is reaching the end of it’s short-lived hope for a hit for Tom Cruise and sinks to 5th with a measly $3.8 million haul. Looks like it’s back to Ethan Hunt for Cruise!

The Box Office top 5 chart (up until Dec. 28th) is below with the total domestic gross to date in brackets.

1)  Les Miserables $30.2 million

2) The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – $11.3 million ($189.8 million)

3)  Django Unchained,– $25 million
