Demi Lovato Talks Being Bipolar, Eating Disorder, Cutting, and Her Ideal Man
Demi Lovato continues to make big strides in her career including gracing the latest cover of Cosmopolitan magazine!
In the interview with the mag, Demi, 19, is very honest as she discusses her past issues which includes a rehab stint, her diagnosis with bipolar, her eating disorder, plus cutting.
“I felt relieved when I found out,” says Demi of being diagnosed with bipolar disorder while in rehab. “Like I’m not completely crazy; there’s a medical reason for all of it.”
After leaving rehab back in 2011 following three months of treatment, Demi admits she still struggles.
“It’s a daily thing; you don’t get time off from it,” she says of her recovery from cutting and bulimia. “And if I feel like myself slipping back into old patterns, I have to ask others for help, which is hard for me to learn, because I really like doing everything on my own.”
In fact, back in March, in a documentary for MTV, Demi admitted: “I cannot tell you that I have not thrown up since treatment. I cannot tell you that I have not cut myself since treatment. I’m not perfect.”
Demi however ends the interview on a positive note as she talks about what she hopes for in the future. “I want to be married with kids in 10 years,” the single Demi tells Cosmopolitan.
“I don’t have many deal breakers. I’ve done so much in my life, it doesn’t feel right to judge other people,” reveals Demi, adding: “Oh, I know one quality I won’t tolerate. I would never be with a guy who is controlling.”
Demi Lovato Reveals She Did Drugs Because She ‘Was Depressed’; Talks Eating Disorder
In an all new interview, former Disney star Demi Lovato is opening up about her past issues with drugs and an eating disorder.
Speaking to Fabulous magazine, Demi, age 19, first reveals that her self esteem issues stemmed from being bullied at her school in Dallas, Texas.
“They called me a whore and told me I was fat and ugly. I shouldn’t have listened, but I took it to heart and it hurt. I thought maybe I didn’t have friends because I was too fat,” remembers Demi.
This then led to her eating disorder battle with bulimia. “I’d make myself sick up to six times a day,” she reveals to Fabulous. “My mum was worried, but because I was going through puberty I was having growth spurts so she assumed that was why I was thinner.”
Demi also opens up about her drug use — reportedly cocaine — though she didn’t want to go into details due to her younger fans.
“It’s something I don’t really want to talk about,” she says apologetically. “What I can say is that I was depressed. I would come off stage in front of 18,000 people and suddenly be alone in a hotel room. I’d come crashing down and would try to find a way to recreate that feeling, to stay ‘up’.”
It didn’t help that being a celebrity made it easier for Demi to get access to drugs. “Promoters gave me drugs and alcohol in restaurants or clubs. They wanted me to come back so I would be seen there. They were basically kissing my ass,” she says.
Demi continues, “I thought they were my friends. I thought I was having fun. Being a celebrity can be dangerous. Nobody says ‘no’. That’s why so many end up overdosing and dying. It could definitely have happened to me.”
